Pinckney Area Information
Pinckney is located in Putnam Township in southern Livingston County. The area was first settled in 1827 by William Kirkland who moved from New York with his family, including wife Caroline who gained fame (and a bit of notoriety) with her writings about the area. With his brother-in-law, James Stansbury, Kirkland formed the William Kirkland Company, which organized the village. Kirkland named the community after his brother, Charles Pinckney Kirkland, a New York attorney. The village was platted in 1837 and incorporated as a village in 1883.
William Kirkland dreamed of starting a new town in the wilds of Michigan to serve the needs of the ever-increasing population. Such dreams were not uncommon during this time. The price of land was relatively cheap and prospects for considerable profits were good if the land was improved and resold. Kirkland journeyed to Putnam and purchased land from Colonel Peterson and others, for starting a new village.
Pinckney is located where East Michigan Route 36 meets US-23 allowing you a centrally located route whether you want to head into downtown Ann Arbor, Lansing, the metro Detroit area or westward toward the state capitol. To the west of Pinckney is Stockbridge and Williamsville, to the east is Whitmore Lake and Novi; and Howell is to the North. Pinckney is also home to a highly sought after vacation and recreation park: Pinckney Recreation Area.
